History

Before 1962

Colonial Period

  • The Algerian railway network was built and operated by several French companies (PLM, Est Algérien, Bône–Guelma, etc.), connecting major northern cities and ports.

1963

Creation of the SNCFA

After independence, the Algerian State nationalised the railway network and created the National Company of Algerian Railways (SNCFA) to manage and operate the country’s railway infrastructure.

1976

Birth of the SNTF

Under the ordinance issued on March 26, 1976, the National Railway Transport Company (SNTF) replaced the SNCFA and became the sole operator responsible for passenger and freight rail transport nationwide.

1980 - 1990

Modernisation of Rolling Stock

  • Introduction of new diesel locomotives (GM and BB series).

  • Establishment of maintenance workshops in Blida, Constantine, Oran and Annaba.
  • Development of industrial freight (ore, hydrocarbons, construction materials).

New Status

  • The SNTF became a Public Industrial and Commercial Establishment (EPIC),

  • Gaining management autonomy while remaining fully state-owned.

2000 - 2010

Major Electrification Projects

  • Modernisation and electrification of key railway lines: Algiers–Thénia, El Harrach–El Affroun, Oued Smar–Gué de Constantine and renovation of major stations: Algiers, Oran, Constantine.

  • Acquisition of modern FLIRT trainsets (Stadler, Switzerland).

2010 - 2020

Network Expansion

  • Development of high-speed and inter-regional lines and the introduction of Coradia trains (Alstom) for passenger transport.

  • Opening of the Algiers–Zeralda suburban line (western suburbs).

Growth and Digital Transformation

  • Launch of online ticket purchase services.

  • In 2024, SNTF transported:

    • - 6 million tonnes of freight (+12%),
    • - 32.5 million passengers,
    • - 113,000 train services during the year.

Strategic Plan

Objective: double both passenger and freight traffic.

Investment programme of 378 billion DZD aiming to:

  • - Modernise stations and maintenance facilities

  • - Acquire new trains

  • - Expand and electrify the network

  • - Improve punctuality and service quality
